Gotta Go, Gotta Go!

Working in remote locations poses issues when nature calls. The oil and gas industry is a prime example, and as the industry continues to grow, it offers great business opportunities for those with restroom and shower trailers.

“Most of the companies in the oil industry are renting units, hence the new start ups in those regions,” says Comforts of Home Services Dan Fischer. “I’ve seen more renting from that industry than purchasing. When we get calls here from people in the oil and gas industry looking to rent combo trailers, I refer them out to our customer base. We get two to three calls a week. Most need them within a couple of weeks—even the guys looking to buy, which is shorter than our production time, so they end up renting too.”

Fischer says that emergency eye wash stations and shower trailers are big request items. “This year, we developed a solar-powered unit that can be self-sufficient in the field. Beyond that, we see a lot of requests for combo trailers from various groups within the oil and gas industry. We’ve also seen an uptick in requests for break room trailers with bathrooms and showers.”

Right now, Comforts of Home is working on a nice 30-foot trailer with a shower, restroom and conference room with air conditioning and cable TV that will be going on an oil rig. “We get a lot of requests for cooling trailers in Texas. They want a place for the guys to get out of the heat and rest while the Dakotas want combo trailers.”

Trailer Options

Several of the major trailer companies build to order, such as Comforts of Home and Black Tie.

Black Tie’s Ryan Meegan is hopeful that the United States government will set job site regulations. “If and when there are regulations mandating that the job sites have hot and cold running water and air conditioning, it will help the industry tremendously.”

UltraLav offers safety shower and eyewash units in their industrial line that are “manufactured with product quality and longevity in mind.”

In addition to offering build-to-order units, Comforts of Home Services offers several standard trailers including their laundry trailer, safety shower with emergency eye wash and shower room with optional sink and toilet trailer, sink trailers, breakroom/workshop/cargo trailers, decontamination trailers with clean and dirty rooms, shower, HEPA air filtration and water filtration and more.

Other Options

EcoJohn offers a green sewage waste combustion system and incinerating toilets for the oil and gas industry, military, disaster and relief efforts, refugee camps or any remote or mobile applications.

According to their website, their product line “consists of waterless toilet systems with incinerating features, as well as waste combustion systems that incinerate black water and eliminates expensive and unpleasant septic pump-out processes.” They offer single and multiple units that are skid or trailer mounted, incineration technology, low flush and waterless toilets and green solutions.

Where Are They?

If you are serious about providing portable restrooms to the industry, PennEnergy Research offers several reports that will break down the sites in the United States. The one I found is $300, which is a small price to pay if you get a contract.

However, with a little more digging on your part, you can find more information on the Tribal Energy and Environmental Information Clearinghouse website. It says that the top natural-gas producing states (in 2006) were Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana and Colorado. It also says that the most active commercial sites for coal are the Black Warrior Basin in Alabama and Mississippi, the San Juan Basin in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico and the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and Montana, with production growing in the Piceance Basin in Colorado and in the Uinta Basin in Utah. Shale gas formations are found in the Rocky Mountain and Appalachian Mountain states, the Dakotas, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Knowing who the players are is also important. Of course, you need to see who is doing what in your area. PetroStrategies has a list of the biggest oil and gas companies on their site.

So, if you are looking to expand your market for your current portable restrooms or looking to expand your business, the oil and gas industry might be a good option for you because everyone’s gotta go sometime.
