FOWA Takes Attendees Around the World

The Florida Onsite Wastewater Association (FOWA) hosted more than 20 vendors and 375 attendees and their families at it’s annual convention and trade show in late July at the popular Daytona Beach.

This year’s theme was “Around the World.” Once registered at the “travel agency,” attendees strolled through Japan, France, Italy, and Egypt to visit with exhibitors. There were also international-themed games for children and a screening of “Ratatouille” in France.

“We are delighted that this many onsite professionals were able to participate despite the still slow economy,” says Sherrill Parr, director of financial and business management at FOWA. “We feel fortunate that we have seen the same number of attendees over the past few years. Many of our members have mentioned that they look forward to this event every year so they can bring their families for an affordable vacation at the beach while they attend classes.”

Attendees were able to get to know each other through a variety of networking opportunities including a fishing trip and casino night. Twenty-five fishers joined Ron Davenport from Infiltrator Systems. Executive Director Roxanne Groover’s grandsons loved catching more fish than their grandfather. After their sea-faring voyage, the fishermen joined others for a delicious lunch and awards. Prizes were given for the biggest fish, most fish, and smallest fish caught.

At the “Speak Easy,” attendees were able to have a roaring good time gambling the night away to the tunes from a DJ. When the adults and kids needed a break from winning their funny money at blackjack, roulette, Texas Hold’em, and craps, they could wonder among the towers of cupcakes or dip fruit or cake into the chocolate fondue.

At the end of the night, attendees could use their funny money to bid for prizes at the FOWA Board of Director sponsored auction. An X-Box went for more than $30,000 in funny money. “We must thank our casino party sponsor, PTI, who helped make it a fun-filled night and even ran one of the Blackjack tables,” says Parr.

To close out the conference, families gathered to listen to music by Southbound for the 4th annual Band at the Beach celebration. “It’s a popular outdoor event sponsored by ADS and the nearly monsoon conditions didn’t deter our attendees or the band,” says Parr. “We just moved everything inside the adjacent covered area and kept the party going!”

“FOWA values family,” says Parr. “We want to make sure that all ages feel welcome. Many of our contractors have family businesses, and we know how hard they work all year long. The FOWA Convention is not only a place for them to come and earn their CEU’s, learn about new technologies and network with other industry professionals, but also a time to relax and enjoy time with their families.”
